My Work Shop

The Garage

To get this project under way, I had to clean out the garage to make room for a workbench.
I started by decking several hundred square feet of the attic and installing a fold-out ladder.
I was able to get ALOT of stuff up there. I then added shelves on both sides of the garage to
further organize the items that we need to keep closer at hand. This gave me a junk free corner to
build my workbench.

The Work Bench

I used a bench kit from 2x4Basics that included plastic legs and shelf risers. I added 2x4s, plywood
pegboard and masonite to make a very sturdy bench. Of course, it had to live in harmony with the fold-out ladder.

Insulating the Garage

The Heat Is On!!!

Summer has come early in Indiana. Our heat index has been as high as 105. My garage is uninsulated and the temps get very high in there. So, in an effort to cool things down and give the A/C a chance at keeping up, I decided to blow insulation into the walls and attic. I bought cellulose insulation from HD and they gave me a free 24 hour rental on the blower. I went into ta second day due to difficulties, but they only charged e .01 for the second day rental. The process involved drilling 2" holes in each framing section and using a nozzle to blow insulation down into each cavity...much more messy and involved than I thought it was going to be.

I also blew about 12" into the attic.

Insulating the Door

The overhead door faces directly west and take alot of heat in the evenings. I added a layer of Reflectix 2 sided foil insulation and seamed up all the edges and any exposed metal with foil tape. I lost a good pair of scissors in there, too! Hehe.

The Results

Today's outside air temp is 85. The temp in the garage is 79 without A/C assistance. The temp in the attic??? 97! Almost 20 degrees difference between the 2 spaces. It is soooo much nicer in the shop now!
