The Project Begins

The Guitar...Finally!

The Body Blank

I planed and edge jointed the body stock and glued it up. The SS jointer took a bit of time to square up but once I got it dialed in it did a great job.

The Top Wood Gets Resawn

After all the work on the band saw, it's time to see the results of my labor. Here is the board I started with. It was 8.5" wide before I ripped it down for resawing. The portion I cut off was the darker heartwood seen at the bottom of the board.

The stock is 6.625" wide...a far cry from the factory stock 6" max. I could have gone 6.750 but I didn't want to add any more work for the saw than needed. The fence is set for a 5/8" cut and the top wood has been jointed on one edge as well as planed flat on one face. With pushblock in hand, it's the first pass on the new table/fence...actually, this is the second pass. I didn't want my wife standing there if the blade was going to fly off...we don't need pictures of that, so I made the first pass before having her grab some shots. End results? It worked beautifully! Nice even cuts, no blade lead issues. No saw stops or power concerns that I could hear or feel.

Here are the 2 pieces I will use for the top...just after resaw and after a cleanup in the planer. I was able to avoid almost all of the heartwood. What's left should cut away during profiling.

And here are the final top and back. I plan to glue up the top and take care of the low spots on the body back tomorrow...well, maybe Monday or Tuesday...tomorrow is Mother's Day and I'm taking my wife/photographer to lunch and a movie.

The Top Is Glued Up

I had time today to joint and glue up the top. I am noticing that the the wood is a bit dry. I got a fair amount of tear out during planing and jointing, so...

...I saved a baggie of planer shavings to patch up anything that remains after profiling and carving. I'll grab some sawdust too sfter sanding.
